He and She Said:

The third consecutive day of great weather, no annoying complications associated with work and jobs, a glittering finale, and a world championship were all on the plate yesterday as we opened and closed FQF, arriving before 11:00am and leaving more than 10 hours later.

The highlights:

  • Beginning the day racing between sets at both end of the Fest, catching the rocking, soulful Mia Borders at the Abita Stage and then racing down Decatur to get the back half of the enchanting Kelcy Mae at the Mint.

Mia Borders at Abita

  • Ending tired but exhilarated with back to back sets by t.b.c. Brass Band and the Hot 8, both at Capital One, followed by an unexpectedly terrific fireworks display.
  • Starting the day with the smoky deliciousness of Love at First Bite’s cochon de lait poboy and finishing with what is now the best purveyor of pies at the Fest. Head on over to the Zydeco stage and grab the crawfish pie from new vendor Lasyone’s. You won’t be sorry.
  • Kind of a light eating day. Understandable given that we participated in Rouses World Championship Crawfish Eating Contest. That’s right, your humble correspondent Steve matched up against a squad of competitive eaters in the professional division, defending the honor of NOLA crawfish eaters by finishing seventh out of ten. More about this event next week.

Notice the fear in the Black Widow's eyes here?

  • A lovely walk down Royal allowed us to hit one stage after another, starting with Gypsy Jazz at Toulouse and working our way up to the Monteleone and their huge new renovation of the Carousel Lounge.
  • No Trombone Shorty for us today, as prior commitments will take us from the Fest before then, but we’ll see what the early hours have to offer.
